Keighley Station Upgrade Shortlisted for National Railway Heritage Award
Keighley station’s £9.9 million transformation has been shortlisted for the National Railway Heritage Awards 2025, recognising the project’s balance of modernisation and preservation of the grade II-listed site.
Completed in the spring, the extensive upgrade included refurbishment of the station forecourt, frontage, waiting room, footbridges, drainage, and masonry. Timber in ramps and roofs was repaired and renewed, including stabilisation of the café’s gable end, while structural strengthening work enabled the reopening of the western elevation link bridge. Additional improvements included masonry and drainage repairs to the western corner of the station car park and the use of innovative engineering solutions to keep the station operational throughout the project.
Jonny Ham, Network Rail lead portfolio manager, said: “We’re honoured to be shortlisted for this award. The restoration of Keighley station has been a true team effort, and we’re proud to have delivered a project that respects the station’s heritage while improving the journey experience for today’s passengers.”
Built in 1885, Keighley station is managed by Northern and is also home to heritage railway services through the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The railway’s new visitor centre in the station’s water tower is also in contention for an award.
The National Railway Heritage Awards have been presented annually since 1979 to recognise high standards of restoration of railway buildings, structures, and signalling installations. This year’s winners will be announced by Rail Minister Lord Hendy at a ceremony in London on Wednesday 3 December.
