This DVD takes viewers along the 101-mile route from the former ferry port of Stranraer to Glasgow Central, a journey of striking contrasts. For just over half the distance, the line is single track, controlled by traditional mechanical signal boxes and electric tokens. The southern section is exceptionally remote, with our two-car Class 156 Sprinter covering 26 miles before reaching the first intermediate station at Barrhill, passing two passing loops along the way—the second at Glenwhilly being one of the most isolated in the British Isles.

From Ayr northwards, the line transitions to electrified double track for the remaining 40 miles into Glasgow, highlighting a dramatic contrast between the Victorian-era signalling in the south and the modern, computer-controlled systems of the West of Scotland Signalling Centre at Cowlairs. This juxtaposition offers a fascinating insight into both historical and contemporary railway operations.

The DVD combines immersive cab footage with views inside the signal boxes, giving viewers a complete understanding of the operational challenges along this diverse route. Aerial shots from a state-of-the-art helicopter further enhance the experience, revealing the line’s scenic landscapes and the layout of the surrounding countryside.

Filmed in high definition, this production captures every detail of the Stranraer to Glasgow line in stunning clarity. From remote rural stretches to busy electrified mainline running, this Driver’s Eye View DVD offers both a visual and operational masterclass on one of Scotland’s most varied railway journeys.
