It is the first large-scale coach driving simulation game from the studio, focusing on replicating Germany’s long-distance bus travel network in collaboration with the real-life operator FlixBus. The game has remained PC-exclusive, though it has been updated extensively since launch with new content, vehicle models, and route expansions. There is no direct prequel to Fernbus Simulator, though TML-Studios had previously developed other transport-focused titles such as Bus Simulator 2012, which helped lay the groundwork for its approach to realistic vehicle handling and route-based gameplay.

At its core, Fernbus Simulator allows players to take on the role of a coach driver navigating Germany’s Autobahn and rural roads, transporting passengers between cities across a network that spans thousands of kilometres. Players follow real-world timetables, manage passenger boarding, and contend with traffic, weather, and day-night cycles. The game world is based on scaled-down real-world geography, giving it a sense of authenticity while ensuring routes remain manageable in length. The collaboration with FlixBus not only provided branding but also lent credibility to the route structure, vehicle design, and passenger management systems.

The inspiration for Fernbus Simulator came from the growing popularity of long-distance bus travel in Europe, particularly after deregulation in Germany’s intercity transport market.
