Following Seas is developed and published by Whipstaff Games and launched into Early Access on 21 November 2025. The game is built using the Unity engine and represents the studio’s first major project in the sailing simulation genre.

Currently, Following Seas is available exclusively for Windows on Steam. A demo was released earlier on 5 October 2024, allowing players to explore core mechanics before the Early Access launch. No console ports or additional platform releases have been announced.

In the game, players command a ship in a fractured, post-empire open world, engaging in activities such as transporting cargo, fishing, and navigating unpredictable weather. It uses semi-realistic sailing mechanics where players adjust sails, manage ballast, and navigate using tools like a compass and quadrant. Maintaining stability is crucial, as flooding, shifting cargo, and free-surface water effects can destabilize the vessel.

Promotion for the game has emphasized community involvement, with the developers highlighting the role of player feedback in shaping the game during Early Access. The small size of the team, described humorously as “1 dev and a myopic Dachshund,” has been used to create a personal connection with the audience and highlight the labor-of-love nature of the project.

Reception so far is limited due to its recent Early Access release. Initial player responses suggest that the game appeals to a small but dedicated audience that enjoys slow-paced, atmospheric sailing experiences. The long-term reception will depend on content expansion, performance improvements, and the successful delivery of the developers’ roadmap, which is currently aimed for completion around 2027.
