Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is a turn-based 4X strategy game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K Games. The game was released on October 21, 2016, for Windows, with subsequent ports to macOS, Linux, iOS, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Android. Aspyr Media handled the macOS and Linux versions. The game was designed by Ed Beach, with Christopher Tin and Geoff Knorr composing the music. The development aimed to innovate the series while retaining its core strategic depth.

In Civilization VI, players lead a civilization from the ancient era into the future, aiming to achieve one of several victory conditions, such as military conquest, technological supremacy, cultural influence, or religious dominance. The game introduced several new mechanics, including the unstacking of cities into districts, active research in both technology and culture, and the addition of new victory conditions like religious victory. These changes were designed to add depth and replayability to the gameplay.

Promotion for Civilization VI included showcasing the game at various gaming conventions and leveraging digital platforms like Steam and GOG for distribution. The game's innovative features, such as the unstacking of cities and the introduction of new victory conditions, were highlighted in promotional materials to attract both veteran fans and newcomers to the series. The game's availability on multiple platforms also expanded its reach to a broader audience.

Upon release, Civilization VI received generally positive reviews from critics and players alike. The game's innovative mechanics, such as the unstacking of cities and the introduction of new victory conditions, were praised for refreshing the series. However, some players expressed concerns over the game's AI behavior and the initial lack of certain features that were present in previous installments. Despite these criticisms, the game's depth and replayability were widely acknowledged, contributing to its success.

The game's expansion packs, Rise and Fall and Gathering Storm, introduced additional content and features that further enhanced the game's depth. Rise and Fall, released in February 2018, added new mechanics like loyalty and governors, while Gathering Storm, released in February 2019, introduced environmental factors and diplomatic systems. These expansions were well-received and contributed to the game's lasting appeal.

Looking ahead, the Civilization VI franchise continues to evolve. Civilization VII was released in February 2025, building upon the foundation laid by Civilization VI with improved mechanics and new features. The success of Civilization VI and its expansions has solidified its place as a landmark title in the strategy genre, influencing the design of future strategy games.
