Tropico 4 is a city-building and political simulation game developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media. It was released on September 1, 2011, for Microsoft Windows, with subsequent releases for Xbox 360 and macOS. The macOS version, titled Tropico 4: Gold Edition, which includes the Modern Times expansion pack, was released by Feral Interactive on July 25, 2013.

In Tropico 4, players assume the role of "El Presidente," the leader of a small Caribbean island nation during the Cold War era. The game focuses on managing the island's economy, infrastructure, and political landscape while balancing relationships with global superpowers. New features include the ability to monitor imports, more interactions with factions and foreign countries, and support for social media status updates.

Promotion for Tropico 4 included showcasing the game at various gaming conventions and leveraging digital platforms for distribution. The game's enhanced political interactions and social media integration were highlighted in promotional materials to attract both veteran fans and newcomers to the series. Its availability on multiple platforms also helped expand its reach to a broader audience.

Upon release, Tropico 4 received generally positive reviews from critics and players alike. The game's depth and complexity were praised, offering a more immersive city-building experience compared to its predecessors. Some players, however, expressed concerns over performance on lower-end systems and the learning curve associated with its intricate mechanics. Despite these criticisms, its innovative mechanics and attention to detail were widely acknowledged.

The Modern Times expansion pack, released on March 27, 2012, introduced new features such as a futuristic setting, additional buildings, and new challenges for players to overcome. These additions enhanced the game's depth and replayability, providing players with more tools to manage their cities effectively.

Looking ahead, the Tropico franchise continues to evolve. The series has seen new entries and reboots over the years, each building upon the foundation laid by its predecessors. Tropico 4's legacy continues to influence the design of city-building simulation games, and it remains a classic example of the genre's potential for depth and complexity.
