Tropico 5 is a construction and management simulation game developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media. It was released for Microsoft Windows on May 23, 2014, with subsequent releases for Linux and macOS on September 19, 2014. Console versions were launched later: Xbox 360 on November 11, 2014, PlayStation 4 on April 28, 2015, and Xbox One on May 23, 2016.

In Tropico 5, players assume the role of "El Presidente," the leader of a small Caribbean island nation. The game spans multiple eras, from colonial times through the World Wars, the Cold War, and into the modern age. Players manage resources, build infrastructure, and navigate political dynamics to lead their nation to prosperity. A notable feature is the introduction of a dynasty system, allowing multiple family members to take on leadership roles over time.

Tropico 5 introduced cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes for up to four players. Players can collaborate or compete on the same island, sharing resources and infrastructure. This addition was a significant departure from previous titles in the series, offering a new dimension to gameplay.

The game was promoted through digital platforms like Steam, where it was made available for pre-purchase, and it was showcased at various gaming conventions to build anticipation. Despite being banned in Thailand due to concerns over its storyline, Tropico 5 achieved significant success in other markets. It debuted at number 1 on Steam and ranked highly in sales charts in Germany and the UK, marking the most successful launch in the Tropico series at the time.

Upon release, Tropico 5 received generally positive reviews from critics. The game's depth and complexity were praised, offering a more immersive city-building experience compared to its predecessors. However, some players expressed concerns over performance on lower-end systems and the steep learning curve associated with its intricate mechanics. Despite these criticisms, the game's innovative mechanics and attention to detail were widely acknowledged.

The Complete Edition of Tropico 5, released on January 29, 2016, includes all downloadable content and expansion packs, such as Espionage and Waterborne. These expansions introduced new gameplay elements, including espionage missions and water-based infrastructure, further enhancing the game's depth and replayability. The Complete Edition was well-received and contributed to the game's lasting appeal.
