£4.5m Upgrade Completed on Highland’s Kyle Line
Network Rail has completed a major programme of upgrades on the Kyle line after a £4.5m, three-week engineering effort in the Highlands. The work, which ran from 19 October to 10 November, saw engineers replace roughly 4.5 miles of track between Achnashellach and Strathcarron, installing new rails, around 2,000 sleepers and fresh ballast. Achnashellach level crossing was also upgraded, alongside inspections of bridges and culverts and clearance of drainage to guard against flooding.
The improvement package forms part of Network Rail’s long-term investment in rural rail links, ensuring the line remains safe and resilient for years to come. The Kyle route, which is relied upon by remote communities and attracts thousands of tourists each year, has now reopened with services running to the normal timetable following the planned closure.
Scott McMurchie, scheme project manager, said: “The Kyle Line isn’t just one of the most scenic rail journeys in Scotland, it’s a lifeline for the communities it serves across the Highlands. It means a lot to people, whether they’re travelling for work, school, or simply to enjoy the local area. The work we’ve carried out was essential to keep the line safe and reliable for years to come. We know how important it is to look after routes like this, and we’re proud to have delivered improvements that will benefit passengers and the wider region. We’d like to thank passengers, local residents, and businesses for their patience and understanding while we delivered this important upgrade.”
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail’s Service Delivery Director, added: “We’re delighted to welcome customers back on board following the completion of this important improvement work. The Kyle line plays a vital role for local communities and visitors alike, and these upgrades will help ensure more reliable journeys for years to come. We’d like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding while the work was carried out and hope they enjoy travelling once again on one of Scotland’s most scenic railway routes.”
