Alstom Powers Adif Trials of ERTMS on Spain’s Secondary Lines
Alstom’s cutting-edge signalling technology is now at the heart of Adif’s latest trials of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on secondary, low-traffic railway lines in Spain. Testing began this November on the metre-gauge section between La Asunción Universidad (León) and Guardo, a part of the León–Bilbao line, marking a significant step in modernising regional rail operations.
The project introduces several innovations, including the use of satellite positioning and public telecommunications networks within ERTMS Level 2. In addition, ERTMS Level 1 trials are underway to explore new operational scenarios, such as level crossing management, even though these tests do not integrate the same advanced technologies as Level 2.
System testing is scheduled to continue into the first half of 2026. Initial trials focus on verifying odometry measurement—tracking the distance travelled by trains—using the ERTMS equipment installed onboard. In the next phase, Level 1 tests will be carried out, followed by the more advanced Level 2 trials.
Gustavo Mateos, Managing Director of the Signalling, Infrastructure and Railway Safety Unit at Alstom Spain and Portugal, said:
“Alstom is supporting Adif’s efforts to modernise Spain’s rail network by providing advanced technology to implement the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) on secondary lines. This initiative underscores Alstom’s commitment to innovation and safety in rail transport, contributing to greater interoperability and efficiency across the network. We are proud to collaborate with Adif on this important project, which represents a significant step forward in enhancing the reliability and sustainability of rail operations in Spain.”
