Bedfordshire Rail Shake-Up: Harlington Bridge Replacement Triggers Weekend Disruption

A newly installed footbridge at Harlington railway station has opened to passengers, marking a key milestone in efforts to improve safety and long-term reliability on the Midland Main Line.

The structure, designed with a lifespan of up to 120 years, replaces an older bridge that will soon be dismantled. Its removal is scheduled to take place during a planned weekend closure between Bedford and Harpenden on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 April, when a wider programme of engineering work will be carried out.

Alongside the bridge replacement, upgrades are being made to the station’s overhead line equipment. Previously attached to the old bridge, the electrification infrastructure will now operate independently beneath the new structure, reducing long-term maintenance risks and improving resilience.

Engineers will use the closure to deliver a range of additional upgrades across the route, including:

• track renewal at Flitwick, where five engineering trains and a tamper maintenance machine will install 642 metres of new rail, along with 2,760 tonnes of ballast and 1,008 concrete sleepers;

• further progress on the Access for All project at Luton station, to install an accessible footbridge and three lifts;

• drainage work at Harpenden station to prevent flooding, protect the railway and support safer, more reliable services for passengers.

The scale of the works will significantly affect services over the weekend. Replacement buses will operate between Bedford and Harpenden for Thameslink passengers, with ticket acceptance extended to alternative routes via Hitchin and London.

Services run by East Midlands Railway will not operate between Bedford and London St Pancras, with amended timetables in place on other sections of the network. Bus replacements will also run between Bedford and Hitchin, with onward rail connections available.

On Saturday 18 April, a revised timetable will see services operate between Harpenden and Brighton, and between London Bridge and Rainham. Trains running between Peterborough and Horsham will additionally call at Norwood Junction, South Croydon, Purley, Earlswood and Salfords.

On Sunday 19 April, further timetable adjustments will be in place, including services between Harpenden and Brighton, West Hampstead Thameslink and Three Bridges, Horsham or Sutton, as well as between London Bridge and Rainham.

Dan Matthews, Network Rail operations director, said:

“The footbridge project at Harlington is nearing completion and will improve safety and reliability for many years to come. The milestone of removing the old bridge is just one part of a packed programme of improvement work on 18-19 April. By co-ordinating this work with other key upgrades along the route, we’re keeping disruption to a minimum and helping passengers see the benefits as quickly as possible. We appreciate everyone’s understanding while these important improvements take place.”
