A violent late-night robbery near Earl’s Court Underground station has led to a lengthy prison sentence after a sustained investigation by British Transport Police.

Jody Cole, 44, of Nunhead Lane in Southwark, was handed a prison term of three years and four months at Inner London Crown Court on Friday 13 March. He had already admitted to robbery and two counts of assaulting emergency workers during a previous hearing on 16 December 2025.

The court was told the incident unfolded late in the evening of 2 December 2022, when a man in his 50s was making his way home on foot towards the station. As he neared the entrance from Warwick Road, Cole approached on a bicycle before dismounting and launching a sudden attack from behind, striking the victim with a wooden plank.

The force of the blow knocked the man to the ground, but the assault did not stop there. Cole continued to hit him repeatedly to the head and body until the victim lost consciousness. While the man lay incapacitated, Cole searched his pockets and stole his wallet, which contained bank cards and a driving licence.

Members of the public alerted police, prompting a rapid response from officers with the Metropolitan Police. As they moved in to intervene, Cole lashed out, punching and kicking both officers in the street. Amid the struggle, a passing vehicle ran over one officer’s foot, allowing Cole to break free and flee.

Officers immediately turned their attention to the injured man, administering first aid as he bled heavily from head wounds. He was later taken to hospital, where he was treated for a broken nose along with multiple cuts and injuries.

Despite the severity of the attack, Cole remained in the area and attempted to use the stolen bank cards at a nearby supermarket roughly half an hour later. That misstep proved pivotal. Police launched an urgent investigation, circulating his image across forces until a British Transport Police officer recognised him from a previous encounter, leading to his arrest.

Detective Constable Richard Rowe said:

"I'm very pleased with the outcome in this case. Cole is a depraved individual who brutally assaulted his victim in an unprovoked attack, in full view of other commuters and the public. I also want to commend the actions of the two officers from the Metropolitan Police, who put themselves in harm's way while attempting to protect the victim and detain Cole. I hope that this sentence provides the victims with a sense of closure, and underscores our commitment to the travelling public that there is absolutely no place for behaviour like this on the railway network."
