BTP boosts rail patrols following attack on Jewish community event in Australia
British Transport Police is increasing patrols at key locations across the rail network in the wake of a deadly attack in Australia over the weekend that targeted a Jewish community event marking Hanukkah.
The force said its thoughts are with the families and friends of those killed and injured in the Bondi Beach area of Sydney, describing the incident as deeply distressing and one that resonates far beyond Australia.
BTP acknowledged that events of this nature can have a profound impact on communities in Great Britain, particularly among Jewish communities. The announcement also comes against the backdrop of the terror attack on a synagogue in Manchester in October, which has heightened concerns around community safety.
In response, passengers can expect to see an increased presence of uniformed BTP officers on the railway over the coming days and weeks. The additional patrols are intended both to enhance security and to provide reassurance to those travelling.
With Hanukkah observed over eight days and events taking place nationwide, policing activity will be focused on locations hosting celebrations, as well as areas where Jewish communities live and work. BTP said this targeted approach is designed to ensure visibility where it is most needed.
Passengers are being encouraged to remain alert while travelling and to speak to officers if they have any concerns. BTP stressed that while officers are there to protect the public, vigilance from passengers also plays a vital role in keeping the railway safe.
Anyone who notices something suspicious or feels uneasy while travelling is urged to trust their instincts and report it by texting BTP on 61016 or speaking to an officer. In an emergency, passengers should always call 999.
