Major engineering work will take place in Deighton over the Christmas period as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), with activity running from 22:15 on Wednesday 24 December until 05:30 on Sunday 27 December. The work is scheduled while trains are not operating on the network.

As part of the project, Whitacre Street overbridge will be demolished, and pre-cast concrete parapets will be installed on the A62 Leeds Road bridge using a crane. These upgrades are essential for the ongoing modernisation of Deighton station, which remains closed until 2027, and will enable track realignment works scheduled for next year.

The realignment will allow the number of tracks to increase from two to four, enabling direct services to overtake stopping services, reducing journey times. It will also allow for the installation of overhead line equipment to power future electrified trains. Diversionary routes in the area remain in place, with road users advised to check roadworks.org for updates.

When Deighton station reopens in 2027, it will feature extended platforms to accommodate longer trains, a new footbridge with lifts providing step-free access to both platforms, and a redesigned station forecourt with a drop-off point, accessible parking, and upgraded waiting shelters.

Sophie Leishman, TRU sponsor, said:

“We’d like to thank the local community for their understanding as we work to deliver major upgrades for Deighton station. The Christmas period is always a good opportunity for work to be completed as there is minimum disruption to services. The work on both bridges during this time will take us a step closer to a much-improved Deighton station and improved rail services through the area and beyond.”
