Colas Rail secures major Metro projects extending work to 2028
Colas Rail UK has secured a series of significant new infrastructure contracts that will see work continue across the West Midlands Metro network for several years, strengthening its role as Principal Contractor within the Midland Metro Alliance.
The newly awarded schemes extend the delivery programme through to 2028 and underline continued confidence from the West Midlands Combined Authority in the Alliance’s ability to deliver complex light rail projects safely, on time and within budget. Together, the projects add further momentum to the expansion of the Metro network and support wider regeneration ambitions across the region.
One of the schemes confirmed is Phase 2 of the Birmingham Eastside Extension. This stage builds on the recently completed first phase to the interim terminus at Millennium Point and will directly interface with the future High Speed 2 Curzon Street Station. The extension is also intended to support longer-term plans for Birmingham’s Sports Quarter and potential Metro connections to the airport, helping unlock regeneration opportunities in Digbeth and nearby areas.
Also included is Phase 2 of the Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro Extension. Phase 1 is already the largest light rail project currently under construction in the UK, with the next stage extending the route from Dudley to the Merry Hill shopping centre. This phase will involve complex civil engineering works, including the construction of a new viaduct and sensitive remediation of historic structures such as the Brunelian Parkhead Viaduct, which has previously received awards for its restoration. The extension is expected to act as a major driver for regeneration across the Black Country, improving connectivity for underserved communities and enabling new housing and commercial development.
In addition to the route extensions, Colas Rail will oversee an increase in stabling capacity at the existing Wednesbury depot. The works include internal alterations to the Operational Maintenance Control building and the creation of a new Control Room to support a growing Metro fleet.
Beyond transport benefits, the schemes are designed to deliver wider social value as part of their construction. Colas Rail and its Alliance partners will continue to support apprenticeships, school engagement and local employment initiatives, with the aim of ensuring the long-term benefits of investment extend beyond the light rail system itself.
Colas Rail Urban Managing Director, Iain Anderson said:
“These awards ensure continuity of work through to 2028 – a significant endorsement of our dedicated, highly skilled, and passionate team. We look forward to continuing this journey, driving forward the successful delivery of projects that will continue to positively shape the lives and the futures of the people of the West Midlands.”
