Colas Rail UK has secured a significant new contract to operate and maintain Network Rail’s New Measurement Train (NMT) fleet, strengthening its long-running role in Britain’s rail infrastructure monitoring programme.

The agreement, which begins in December 2025, will cover both the running of the specialist train and the full suite of light and heavy maintenance tasks required to keep it operational throughout Control Period 7. Colas Rail’s Freight division has supported the operation of the NMT since 2015, but the new deal marks an expansion of its responsibilities as it works more closely with Network Rail’s Infrastructure Monitoring Team.

The NMT, often dubbed the “Flying Banana” because of its yellow livery, is formed of two Class 43 power cars and five Mark 3 coaches, packed with diagnostic equipment used to analyse track condition across the network. The train plays a critical role in helping Network Rail assess wear, geometry and defects, supporting safer and more reliable services for passengers and freight.

Freight Operations Director Sep Semsarzadeh welcomed the win, saying:
“This contract is a fantastic addition to our portfolio of Infrastructure Monitoring services for Network Rail. The award of this contract demonstrates Network Rail’s confidence in our ability to deliver top-notch Infrastructure Monitoring services. It’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.”

The expanded partnership will feed into Network Rail’s regional monitoring programmes across the country, underpinning efforts to maintain and renew the railway throughout CP7.
