Rail services on one of eastern India’s most heavily used rail corridors were badly disrupted late on Saturday night after a freight train derailed in Bihar’s Jamui district, leaving thousands of passengers facing cancellations, diversions and extended delays.

The incident occurred at around 11.25pm, when eight wagons of a goods train left the tracks between Lahabon and Simultala railway stations. The affected section falls under the Asansol division of Eastern Railways and forms part of the vital Howrah–Patna–Delhi main line, which carries a high volume of both passenger and freight traffic.

Officials confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported. However, the derailment brought overnight rail movement to a standstill on the route, with around two dozen trains affected during what is typically a busy weekend period.

An Eastern Railway official said an investigation has been ordered to establish the cause of the derailment. Emergency response teams were dispatched quickly, with accident relief trains sent from Asansol, Madhupur and Jhajha to assist with recovery operations.

Engineers worked through the night to clear the derailed wagons and restore the line, with restoration efforts described as being carried out on a priority basis. In the meantime, several long-distance services were diverted via alternative routes, including the Dhanbad–Gaya section, in an attempt to limit wider disruption.

Railway authorities have advised passengers travelling on affected routes to check the latest train running information, as repair work continues and the inquiry into the incident progresses.
