Hope for Blackpool rail link as Avanti seeks approval for added service
Avanti West Coast has submitted a proposal to reinstate an additional weekday train between Blackpool and London, following criticism over recent reductions to the resort’s rail services.
The operator confirmed it has asked to run an extra service from May, when the next national timetable change is due to take effect, although approval has not yet been granted. Rail industry sources suggest the bid may relate to the 12.52 GMT departure from Blackpool to London Euston.
Direct weekday services between Blackpool and the capital were reduced last month, falling from four trains a day in each direction to just two. The changes prompted concern locally over the impact on connectivity for both residents and visitors.
An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said:
"As with every timetable change, we have bid for the additional services that we wish to run, and these are subject to approval by the Office of Rail and Road. These services, which may be showing in some online rail systems, are not confirmed."
Political pressure has also been building over the scale of the cuts. Blackpool South MP Chris Webb has confirmed he is due to meet Transport Minister Lord Peter Hendy after raising concerns about the reduced timetable and its effect on the town’s links with London.
Avanti West Coast has previously stated that the decision to cut services on the Blackpool route was taken by the Office of Rail and Road, rather than the operator itself.
