Two leading figures from open access operators Hull Trains and Lumo have been recognised at this year’s Rail Staff Awards, an annual event that highlights the achievements of rail professionals across the industry. Deborah Birch, Head of HR at Hull Trains, received the HR and Recruitment Person Award for her long-standing commitment to promoting diversity, career development and skills growth within the company. Over more than ten years, she has helped the operator achieve a notable 55:45 male-female workforce ratio, regarded as one of the most balanced in the sector.

Lumo’s People and Culture Manager, Lindsay Gauntlett, was also celebrated, receiving a ‘highly commended’ mention in the same category. Since joining Lumo at its launch five years ago, she has supported the company’s expansion on the East Coast route from 20 employees to 115. She is now playing a key role in recruiting and shaping a new team for services planned to run between Stirling and London Euston next year on the West Coast Main Line.

Held at Birmingham’s NEC, the Rail Staff Awards brings together professionals from varied roles including customer service, management, training, apprenticeships and engineering, recognising the broad range of expertise that keeps the rail network operating. Both operators said the recognition reflects the impact of their HR and people-focused leadership on workplace culture and staff development.

Deborah Birch said:

“I was truly shocked when I heard my name read out at the awards ceremony, I couldn’t quite believe it! I’ve loved the past ten years I’ve spent at Hull Trains, particularly helping to build the inclusive and positive culture that we have here. The strength and adaptability of our team depend on different perspectives from across the spectrum of the people who make up our local communities. I’m proud to have played a part in ensuring we have a team who reflect that.”

Lindsay Gauntlett said:

“Building a team from scratch is such a brilliant opportunity and it’s something that we’ve really relished at Lumo, as we continue to grow five years on. I’ve never worked anywhere as supportive as here. If I’m struggling, there’s always someone ready to help. It’s not just me who feels that way - people are protective of this place, because they’ve helped build it.”

Lumo recently achieved the Clear Assured Bronze Standard, an international accreditation for organisations that demonstrate strong commitments to diversity and inclusion.

Stuart Jones, Managing Director of First Rail Open Access, said:

“I’m very proud of all our colleagues who put in their all every single day to ensure that we provide the best possible service for our customers. Debbie and Lindsay are a vital part of ensuring that everyone within Lumo and Hull Trains feels valued, supported and empowered to do just that. A huge congratulations to them both.”

Hull Trains and Lumo operate without government subsidy, generating all revenue independently and focusing their services on communities that are often underserved by traditional franchised routes.
