LNER Tells Customers “Do Not Travel” After Broken Rail Disrupts Services
LNER have earlier advised customers not to travel for the rest of the day after a broken rail between Newark Northgate and Retford caused widespread disruption across its network.
The operator shared the update on social media, stating: “DO NOT TRAVEL. We are experiencing major disruption between #NewarkNorthgate and #Retford today, affecting the whole LNER route. As a result, we are issuing a Do Not Travel notice for the remainder of the day.”
Services on the affected section are experiencing delays, diversions, and short-notice cancellations. Passengers have been told that their tickets can be used at no extra cost on several alternative operators, including Avanti (London Euston to Manchester, Glasgow Central and Edinburgh), TransPennine Express (Manchester, Leeds, York and Newcastle), Northern (Carlisle to Newcastle), East Midlands Railway (London St Pancras to Leicester and Sheffield), CrossCountry (Sheffield, Doncaster, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh), and Thameslink (London to Peterborough).
LNER urged customers to check travel updates before setting out, as services on the rest of the route may continue to be affected.
Lines have since reopened but due to knock on effects the advice is still to defer travel today if possible.
