Major Accessibility Upgrade Planned for Tenby Railway Station
Passengers at Tenby station are set to benefit from major accessibility improvements as Network Rail confirms plans to build a new fully accessible footbridge complete with lifts.
The scheme, backed by the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme and the Welsh Government, will transform the passenger experience at the busy West Wales station. The new bridge will make it easier for disabled passengers, families with prams and those carrying heavy luggage to move between platforms, creating a more inclusive and user-friendly station.
Helen Hodgson, Senior Sponsor for Network Rail’s Wales and Borders route, said:
“We’re delighted to be improving accessibility at Tenby Station, ensuring that all passengers can travel with confidence and independence. These upgrades will make a real difference for everyone using the station and reflects our commitment to building a more inclusive and sustainable railway for the communities we serve.”
Work on the project will begin in December 2025, with Network Rail’s contractor, AmcoGiffen, setting up a site compound near the air cadet huts. This will temporarily reduce the number of parking spaces available in the station car park while the upgrades are carried out.
Most of the construction will take place during the day, between 7:30am and 6:00pm, although some overnight work – from 10:00pm to 6:00am – will be necessary when the railway is closed for safety reasons. The station will remain open to passengers throughout the works.
The new facilities are expected to be completed and open to the public by Christmas 2026, marking a significant milestone in improving access and comfort for rail users in Tenby and the wider region.
Network Rail will also hold a public drop-in session on Wednesday 19 November, between 3:00pm and 7:00pm, at St Mary’s Church on High Street. Residents will be able to view the plans, meet members of the project team, and ask questions about the upcoming work.
