Major Christmas upgrade planned for Meldreth Road level crossing
Network Rail will upgrade the level crossing on Meldreth Road in Cambridgeshire this Christmas as part of a wider signalling renewal project designed to improve long-term safety. The crossing, which has one of the highest risk profiles in the region, is set for a major modernisation to cope with increasing rail and road traffic and to ensure it remains safe for the next three decades.
The existing automatic half-barrier system operates independently from the main signalling network and has served the area for many years. However, rising usage on both the road and the railway has increased the safety risks associated with the layout. When crossings cannot be closed entirely, engineers look to technology-led upgrades to reduce danger to drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.
In December 2025, the crossing will be converted to a manually controlled barrier with CCTV. This system connects directly to the main signalling network and uses full-width barriers controlled remotely by a signaller who monitors the crossing via cameras. The design is intended to prevent motorists from attempting to weave around lowered barriers, with the signaller confirming the crossing is clear before allowing trains to pass.
Preparation work has already begun, and installation of the new equipment will take place over Christmas. For safety reasons, the crossing will close to all road traffic from 07:00 on Wednesday 24 December 2025, reopening at 19:00 on Monday 12 January 2026. A diversion will guide road users via the A10 to maintain access between Meldreth and Shepreth during the closure.
Once complete, the upgraded crossing will have longer barrier-down times, similar to the nearby Station Road crossing in Shepreth. Users will be reminded to follow key safety steps, including stopping when warnings activate, waiting until all signals cease and checking the exit is clear before crossing. Pedestrians should continue to stop, look and listen before stepping onto the crossing.
Emily Heria, Senior Sponsor for Network Rail Anglia, said:
“This December we're delivering a key part of the Cambridge re-signalling programme by upgrading the level crossing on Meldreth Road to keep all users safe for years to come. We understand that the road is an important connection between Meldreth, Shepreth and Cambridge, and closing the road to allow the crossing to be upgraded will cause some local disruption for road users for which I am sorry. We've worked hard with the local highways authority to keep the impact of the road closure to a minimum with a simple and short diversion route for drivers.”
