Major Disruption as Power Loss Forces Rail Closure on Cumbrian Coast
Rail services on the Cumbrian Coast have been suspended after a loss of electrical supply forced the closure of the line between Sellafield and Corkickle. With all lines blocked, trains are unable to operate through the section, leading to services being altered or curtailed.
Network Rail has confirmed it is aware of the fault and has deployed engineers to the site, working alongside the local electricity supplier to restore power. Passengers are being advised that disruption is expected to continue until at least 16:30, with knock-on effects across the route.
Northern has put additional road replacement transport in place between Sellafield and Corkickle to help customers connect with existing bus services operating between Corkickle and Whitehaven. These arrangements are already in place due to ongoing track improvement works, and passengers are being warned that journeys using road transport could take up to 60 minutes longer than usual.
To help customers complete their journeys, Northern has lifted all ticket restrictions in the affected area. Northern tickets can be used at no extra cost on any alternative Northern or TransPennine Express service via any reasonable route, including services that would normally require different ticket types. Advance and Peak restrictions have also been suspended for the duration of the disruption and will be reinstated once normal services resume.
Passengers are reminded that ticket acceptance agreements and alternative travel arrangements may be withdrawn at short notice. Travellers are advised to check with their train operator for the latest information before setting out.
