Major engineering work finished on Windsor line, boosting reliability
Network Rail and South Western Railway have thanked customers following the completion of essential upgrade works on the route linking Staines and Windsor & Eton Riverside.
Engineers carried out a programme of renewal and maintenance at various locations along the line. In Wraysbury, teams replaced more than a kilometre of rail and strengthened the track bed to improve long-term reliability. At Datchet level crossing, the road surface was renewed and drainage enhanced to support smoother and more consistent operation for trains and road users.
Upgrades were also undertaken on two important structures. At Colne River Bridge in Wraysbury, 20 wheel timbers — the long supports beneath the track — were renewed. Meanwhile, at Black Potts Viaduct near Windsor, 15 wheel timbers were replaced alongside new fixtures, holding straps and walkways. These improvements are expected to support safe and dependable services well into the future.
Speaking on behalf of Network Rail and South Western Railway, Peter Williams, South Western Railway’s Customer and Commercial Director said: “We’d like to thank our customers for their patience while we completed these important upgrades between Staines and Windsor. The work was scheduled to take place during the autumn half term break to minimise disruption, with the improvements meaning smoother, more reliable journeys for everyone who uses the Windsor line.”
