Minibus and Light Rail Collide in Tuen Mun, Injuring 12

A suspected misjudgment of traffic signals by a minibus driver led to a collision with a light rail train in Tuen Mun early Sunday, resulting in 12 injuries.

The crash unfolded at approximately 12.48am, when a green minibus travelling along Tsing Lun Road towards Lam Tei struck a route 615B light rail service.

The impact forced the light rail train to slide several metres before stopping and becoming partially derailed, while the minibus sustained major front-end damage.

The 64-year-old minibus driver, surnamed Fung, suffered leg injuries and became trapped inside the vehicle, prompting firefighters to cut him free. The light rail captain, a 34-year-old surnamed Ho, received a head wound.

Twelve individuals in total were hurt, including six men and four women aged between 16 and 66. All victims were conscious and taken to Tuen Mun Hospital.

Police said initial checks showed both drivers passed alcohol tests, though investigators believe the minibus driver may have misread traffic signals.

The driver was subsequently arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and remains in custody as enquiries continue.

Responding to media questions, MTR confirmed the collision involving the 615B light rail train took place around 12.40am Sunday (Nov 2), adding that the captain and injured passengers were transported to hospital.

MTR also stated that the light rail was operating according to signal instructions at the time, citing a review of driving records.

Although the crash caused some disruption to light rail services, passenger impact was limited as it occurred near the end of operating hours.
