Morning rush thrown into chaos after vehicle hits Radlett bridge
A collision between a lorry and a bridge in Hertfordshire triggered widespread disruption to road and rail travel during the morning rush, after debris fell towards the railway below.
The incident is believed to have occurred on the B556 Harper Lane in Radlett, shortly beyond the junction with Watling Street, early on January 15. The impact damaged the bridge parapet, sending part of the wall down towards the tracks and forcing an immediate response from emergency services and transport operators.
Harper Lane was closed between the A5183 and Harperbury, leading to diversions for cars and buses. At the same time, train services were suspended between Radlett and St Albans City while the structure was assessed, adding to the knock-on effects for commuters.
Although the railway line has since reopened, restrictions remain in place. One of the two southbound lines is operating under a reduced speed limit, resulting in cancellations and delays of up to 25 minutes on several services. A St Albans commuter group described conditions as “carnage” for those trying to reach work.
Hertfordshire County Council confirmed the closure and said the bridge owner was working to assess the damage. A council spokesperson said:
“The B556 Harper Lane has been closed between the A5183 and Harperbury, following an apparent collision between a vehicle and the bridge parapet. Network Rail, who own the bridge, are investigating and making the bridge safe.”
Rail operator Thameslink warned that further engineering work will be required, raising the prospect of continued disruption beyond the initial incident. A spokesperson said:
“Please leave extra time for your journey, and check your train before heading to the station. For the latest information, please check our Thameslink website where anyone who has been delayed by 15 minutes or more can claim compensation.”
