Network Rail Presses Ahead With Beeston Station Heritage Upgrade
Work is under way on a £1.36 million scheme to refurbish waiting shelters and a historic canopy at Beeston station, as Network Rail moves to safeguard the site’s long-term future.
The investment focuses on structures on platforms 1 and 2, where age-related deterioration has been identified. Network Rail says the project will improve passenger safety while carefully preserving the character of the grade II-listed station.
As part of the refurbishment, timber affected by wet rot is being replaced, alongside corroded metal components and damaged glazing. Repairs are being carried out in phases, allowing the station platforms to remain accessible throughout the works and keeping disruption to passengers to a minimum.
Planned improvements include targeted timber renewals, treatment and repainting of metalwork, replacement of canopy glazing, and repairs and cleaning to roof drainage systems. Together, the work is intended to stabilise the historic structures and extend their lifespan.
The project will sit alongside accessibility upgrades completed last year, which saw new lifts, staircases and a walkway installed at the station. Those works were delivered by Network Rail through the Government’s Access for All programme to improve step-free access.
Network Rail has worked closely with the Friends of Beeston Station during the planning stages, with the refurbishment expected to be finished by the end of March 2026.
Ann Shannon, scheme project manager for Network Rail, said:
“This refurbishment is essential to ensure the safe and sustainable future of Beeston station’s historical structures. We’re working closely with conservation officers and local stakeholders to maintain the station’s heritage while delivering modern improvements to benefit passengers. We’re also grateful for the support of our neighbouring landowner in accommodating access to his property to allow for these improvements.”
Sarah Hampton, secretary of the Friends of Beeston Station, said:
“It is wonderful to see the restoration of this lovely, listed station. The investment by Network Rail shows a real commitment to rail users and to the local community.”
