Network Rail shuts Featherstone crossing amid “chicken” fears with trains

Network Rail has taken the decision to close Sportsfield level crossing in Featherstone after a series of serious safety incidents raised concerns about public risk.

The closure, approved by Wakefield Council, came into effect on Thursday 23 April and will remain in place for 21 days. The crossing was secured with fencing as part of the emergency action.

The move follows four separate cases of dangerous misuse within a two-week period, incidents which officials say could have resulted in serious injury or worse. Among those reported were youths deliberately stepping in front of approaching trains, as well as a separate case where a child was allowed to access the railway unsupervised.

Access across the line is now being redirected, with the nearest alternative route located a short distance to the east via Halfpenny Lane.

Discussions are ongoing around the long-term future of the crossing. Network Rail is considering a range of safety improvements before any potential reopening, including the introduction of warning light systems to better alert users to approaching trains.

Darren Robertson-Wilson, Network Rail level crossing manager, said:

“The safety of people who live near or use the railway is our top priority, and we don’t take a decision to seek an emergency level crossing closure lightly. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this closure might cause for residents but the behaviour seen at Sportsfield level crossing in recent weeks has been extremely concerning. We’ll work closely with the local authority and the community as we assess future options for the crossing.”
