Northern Highlights How Train Travel Can Be Cheaper Than Everyday Purchases

Northern has launched a new campaign to challenge the idea that train travel is always expensive, showing that many off-peak fares cost less than common everyday purchases. From takeaway coffees to meal deals and streaming subscriptions, a simple train journey can be a surprisingly affordable option for days out, nights with friends, or weekend trips.

As part of the campaign, Northern is hosting a gameshow-style event called ‘Higher or Lower’ in city centres this week. Members of the public are invited to guess whether the cost of a Northern train ticket is higher or lower than familiar daily items, with chances to win spot prizes including free travel tickets and other giveaways. The activity will take place at Leeds Trinity Shopping Centre on Thursday 30 October, and at Manchester Arndale on Friday 31 October, both running from 10am to 3pm.

Alex Hornby, Commercial and Customer Director for Northern, said: “There’s a big misunderstanding out there that train travel always comes with a high price tag - and it simply isn’t true. Millions of the tickets we sell every year cost just £5 or less. This autumn, we want to show people just how affordable a day out by train can be. Whether it’s exploring a new city, catching up with friends or heading somewhere scenic, many of our tickets cost less than the everyday items we all buy without a second thought.”

Northern hopes the campaign will encourage more people to consider rail travel for leisure trips and short journeys, helping the public see that getting out and about by train is both convenient and budget-friendly.
