A person has died following a collision between a train and a car at a level crossing in Cambridgeshire.

British Transport Police said officers were called to Dimmocks Cote level crossing on the A1123 at Stretham, between Waterbeach and Ely, at around 10:15 GMT on Tuesday after reports of the crash.

A BTP spokesperson said:

"Officers responded alongside paramedics and sadly a person has been pronounced dead at the scene."

In the immediate aftermath, National Rail confirmed that all lines between Waterbeach and Ely were closed, with no services running between Cambridge North and Ely while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The train involved was operated by CrossCountry. The company said it had been working with emergency services and Network Rail to “manage the situation safely and support those onboard”, and advised passengers to check their journeys before travelling.

BTP also confirmed that another person was receiving treatment for minor injuries and has appealed for witnesses to come forward.
