Person dies on tracks as Swindon–Gloucester line brought to a standstill

Train services between Swindon railway station and Gloucester railway station were suspended on Monday morning after emergency services responded to an incident on the line near Stroud railway station.

All lines in the area were blocked as crews attended the scene, bringing services to a halt and causing widespread disruption. Trains in the region were either cancelled or altered, with some only completing part of their scheduled journeys.

Officers from the British Transport Police were called to the railway at 7.26am on 20 April following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended the incident.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said:

“Officers were called to the line near Stroud railway station at 7.26am on April 20 to reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

Network Rail confirmed that teams were working alongside emergency services to manage the situation and restore services as safely as possible.

A Network Rail spokesperson added:

“We're working with Network Rail and the emergency services to deal with the incident as sensitively, quickly and safely as possible. Some trains will be revised, only completing parts of their normal journeys, and there will also be some cancellations.”
