Person dies on tracks near Baldock as major rail disruption hits commuters
A person has died after being discovered on the railway tracks near Baldock railway station, prompting widespread disruption to services.
Emergency services were called to the scene at around 10.30am, with officers from British Transport Police attending alongside paramedics. Despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident led to all lines in the area being blocked for a period, causing significant disruption to rail services. Thameslink arranged rail replacement transport and implemented ticket acceptance with other operators while the situation was dealt with.
Although lines have since reopened, disruption has continued into the evening with residual delays expected as services recover.
British Transport Police said:
"Officers were called at around 10.30am today to reports of a casualty on the tracks in the Baldock area. Officers responded with paramedics, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries into the circumstances leading up to the person's death are ongoing."
