Perth peak-hour chaos after train partially derails near Bayswater
Peak-hour travel in Perth was thrown into disruption on Monday after a train partially derailed near Bayswater Station, forcing the cancellation of multiple services and causing lengthy delays.
The Public Transport Authority confirmed that trains on the Airport, Ellenbrook, Midland and Fremantle lines were affected, with a spokesperson stating the incident occurred on Monday afternoon when two wheel undercarriages on a railcar had “partially come off the tracks” shortly after departing Bayswater at low speed. All passengers on board were safely evacuated, and an investigation is now under way to determine the cause.
A two-car train was seen stationary on the line just south of Bayswater Station, where Transperth staff were inspecting both the track and the damaged carriages. As a result of the derailment, trains have been cancelled between Perth and Redcliffe, Perth and Morley, and Perth and Bassendean. Transperth warned that the disruption would continue beyond Monday’s evening peak.
Replacement buses are being organised to assist affected passengers. The transport authority is advising commuters to allow extra time for their journey and to be aware that substitute bus services may not align with scheduled rail connections. Travellers have been encouraged to check the Transperth website for the latest updates.
Local residents also reported feeling the impact of the incident. One Bayswater resident, who did not wish to be named, said her home shook suddenly. “It was like an earthquake,” she said. Traffic in the area remains heavy as recovery work continues.
