Rail passengers across the North West are being urged to plan ahead this weekend as forecasters warn of severe rainfall likely to cause widespread disruption.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for much of Lancashire and Cumbria from Saturday 13 December through to Monday 15 December, with prolonged downpours expected to affect rail routes and road connections. Cumbria faces an even more serious orange warning from Sunday morning until Monday afternoon, with more than 200mm of rain possible over a 48-hour period.

Network Rail says it is working closely with train operators to identify safety measures that can be introduced ahead of the worst of the weather. These precautions, which may include speed restrictions and changes to services, are designed to protect passengers but are likely to impact journey times.

Travellers are being strongly advised to check their routes before setting off, with operators warning that conditions may change at short notice depending on the severity of the rainfall and the effect on infrastructure.

Darren Miller, infrastructure director at Network Rail, said:

“Our teams work hard alongside our train operator partners to prepare as much as possible for these extreme weather events, but passengers should be aware that this heavy rain could cause disruption. Please plan your journey in advance and make sure you will be able to reach your destination.”
