The number of rail journeys made using Transport for Wales’ pay as you go (PAYG) tap on, tap off system has now surpassed two million.

Launched in November 2024, the technology has become TfW’s fastest-growing ticketing product, offering a simpler, more flexible way to travel. TfW was the first train operator outside London and the South East to introduce the system, which is currently available at 95 stations across the South East Wales Metro region. The service provides passengers with better value fares and daily or weekly fare capping.

The success of PAYG in South East Wales is paving the way for its introduction in North Wales next year as part of the wider Network North Wales programme, extending similar benefits to communities across the North Wales and Borders region.

Ken Skates, Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, said:

“I am delighted that more and more passengers are opting for pay as you go, making the most of a simpler and fairer way of paying for their rail and bus tickets. I look forward to welcoming pay as you go ticketing to North Wales next year so that many more people can just tap and go.”

Alexia Course, Chief Commercial Officer at Transport for Wales, added:

"It's great to see so many customers embracing this convenient and simple way of travelling. When we talk about improving the customer experience, ‘tap on, tap off’ ticketing is exactly what we mean. It’s making rail travel faster, fairer, and more accessible, which is driving both customer satisfaction and revenue growth for the network."
