Saxmundham station upgrade improves access with new signage and facilities

Passengers using Saxmundham railway station will now find it easier to navigate their journey, following the installation of new wayfinding signage funded through a community grant scheme.

The improvements have been delivered by the East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership, which secured £5,100 from Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Improvement Fund. The upgrades focus on providing clearer, more accessible information for those arriving at the station and its car park.

New signage has been positioned across the site to guide passengers towards additional parking areas, public transport connections and local facilities, including public toilets. Importantly, the signs highlight both step-free and stepped access routes, helping travellers make informed choices depending on their needs.

Alongside the signage, the project has also delivered environmental enhancements, including replanting work and the addition of a new planter to improve the overall appearance of the station surroundings.

Greater Anglia’s funding programme supports a wide range of initiatives aimed at strengthening the railway’s role within local communities. Projects can range from small station upgrades to broader schemes encouraging rail use, supporting education, improving biodiversity or promoting local heritage, provided they deliver clear benefits for both passengers and the wider area.

Thalia Woodgate, East Suffolk Lines Community Rail Partnership Officer, said:

“Upgrading the signage at Saxmundham is a simple change that makes a real difference. Clear, easy-to-follow information helps people feel more confident using the station and planning their onward journey. It’s particularly important for passengers who may be less familiar with the network or who need step-free access, helping to remove barriers and make rail a more accessible choice for everyone.”

Scott Dolling, Greater Anglia’s Partnerships Manager, said:

“Projects like this show how relatively small improvements can have a big impact on the overall passenger experience. By working in partnership with local organisations, we can improve accessibility, strengthen local connections and encourage more people to choose rail, delivering real benefits for both the community and the railway.”
