ScotRail launches first Boxing Day services on Aberdeen–Edinburgh routes
ScotRail is set to run Boxing Day services between Aberdeen, Arbroath and Edinburgh Waverley for the first time, creating new travel options for customers in the north-east during one of the busiest periods of the year. The operator will run trains every two hours on 26 December, broadening opportunities for festive travel, shopping trips and essential journeys.
The first departures will start mid-morning, with the 09:51 service from Arbroath to Edinburgh Waverley and the 11:35 return from the capital. Aberdeen will also see a 09:54 departure to Edinburgh, followed by a return service at 10:35. These additions form part of a broader revision to the Boxing Day timetable, which continues to provide traditional Strathclyde-area services while maintaining links to Perth, Alloa, Dunblane, Dundee, Leven and the main Glasgow–Edinburgh corridor.
Throughout December, ScotRail is expanding capacity across its network, adding more seats and operating additional weekend late-night trains to meet seasonal demand. The operator is also urging travellers to plan ahead, particularly as engineering works continue over the Christmas and New Year period. On both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, last trains will depart earlier than normal, while—as has long been the case—no services will run on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
A largely standard timetable will resume from 27 to 30 December, except on routes affected by engineering work, before a revised schedule returns on 2 January 2026. Customers are encouraged to check the ScotRail website or app for full details. Staff will also be available at stations, Help Points and via social media to support anyone seeking guidance during their journey.
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, said:
“The introduction of Boxing Day services to and from Aberdeen for the first time is a real boost for customers, and we’re pleased to be offering more options for travel during one of the busiest times of the year. Across Scotland’s Railway, we’re adding extra services and more seats in the lead up to Christmas and New Year to help customers make the most of the festive season, whether they’re heading to the sales, visiting family, or enjoying a night out. With the removal of peak fares, travelling by train offers even better value for money over the holidays, and we’re encouraging everyone to check their journey on the ScotRail app or website before they set off.”
