Siemens Mobility Showcases £240m Goole Rail Village Investment to Local Leaders
Siemens Mobility’s Rail Village in Goole, East Yorkshire, recently hosted Councillor Rob Waltham MBE, Leader of North Lincolnshire Council, and Ros Jones CBE, Mayor of Doncaster, highlighting the company’s £240 million investment in the region. The facility, already producing new Piccadilly line trains for London, is expected to create up to 1,000 direct jobs and around 1,700 across the supply chain, while supporting the development of future Bakerloo line and battery bi-mode trains for the UK.
During the visit, local leaders were briefed on the site’s focus on building a skilled and diverse workforce. More than 40 apprentices are currently training in manufacturing and engineering roles, while initiatives such as Women in Manufacturing events, along with employee resource groups including Disability, EmBRACE, Pride, and Women’s Networks, promote diversity across the workforce.
The delegation also discussed Siemens Mobility’s plans to assemble battery bi-mode trains in Goole. These trains, already operational in Germany, offer a sustainable alternative to diesel trains for the UK’s unelectrified routes, potentially saving £3.5 billion over 35 years and cutting CO2 emissions by around 12 million tonnes. The Goole site is already preparing to deliver new Bakerloo line trains, strengthening London’s rail network while securing skilled employment in East Yorkshire.
The Rail Village features a train manufacturing facility, components facility, logistics and distribution centre, and a bogie assembly and service centre currently under construction. The complex is designed to drive long-term economic growth and provide highly skilled jobs across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said:
“Doncaster has a proud rail heritage, and it's inspiring to see Siemens Mobility continuing that legacy with modern manufacturing and technologies right on our doorstep. My focus remains on delivering jobs, growth, and prosperity for Doncaster, and the Goole Rail Village is clearly a vital contributor to this. The discussions around future train orders and the potential of battery bi-mode technology are crucial for ensuring sustained employment and advancing sustainable transport solutions for our communities.”
Niraj Sondhi, Commercial Director at Siemens Mobility, added:
“We were very pleased to host Councillor Waltham and Mayor Jones as a substantial contributor to local employment throughout Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, offering jobs, apprenticeships, and training for local people in North Lincolnshire and Doncaster. This visit underscored our shared goal of boosting regional prosperity and transforming rail travel and transport.”
