Regional rail services in Greater Poland are set to receive a new fleet of electric trains after regional authorities signed a major rolling stock agreement with Stadler.

The contract, signed on 12 March between representatives of the Marshal’s Office of the Greater Poland Province and the manufacturer, will see up to 20 FLIRT electric multiple units delivered for regional and agglomeration services. The agreement is valued at approximately €263 million and initially covers the supply of 10 five-car trains, with an option for a further 10 units.

The first of the new trains are expected to enter passenger service at the beginning of 2028. Officials say the fleet will help improve comfort for passengers while also reducing energy consumption and operational costs across the regional network.

All of the vehicles will be built in Poland, with Stadler highlighting the project as an important step for both the development of modern rail transport in the region and the continued growth of its engineering capabilities in Greater Poland.

Stadler has maintained a presence in Poland since 2006 and has steadily expanded its footprint in the country. The company now employs more than 2,000 people across three manufacturing plants located in Siedlce, Środa Wielkopolska and Białystok. It also operates engineering offices in Poznań, Siedlce and Warsaw, alongside service centres in Łódź and Sochaczew.

Radosław Banach, president of the board of Stadler Polska said:

“We will deliver innovative, latest-generation FLIRT vehicles to Greater Poland – modern and energy-efficient multiple units, with more than 3,000 units sold in 24 countries worldwide. In our Siedlce plant, we have manufactured over 650 FLIRT vehicles for operators from 18 countries, 127 of which operate on Polish tracks. These are proven, comfortable trains, with excellent reliability results. Stadler Polska engineers, including our team in Poznań, will be responsible for designing the vehicles for Greater Poland, creating tangible added value in the region. Our local engineering team currently consists of 100 specialists, half of which work in Poznań. This year, we plan to recruit an additional 20 engineers.”
