Stadler and Mount Rigi Railways have formalised an order for four additional custom-built rack-and-pinion trains, designed to handle the steep slopes of Mount Rigi while offering passengers a comfortable, reliable, and sustainable travel experience. Once delivered, both lines of the Mount Rigi Railways network will operate with Stadler’s modern vehicles.

Since 2022, six Stadler rack-and-pinion trains have been serving the scenic route between Vitznau and Rigi Kulm. The new order will supply four more trains for the line linking Goldau and Rigi Kulm, ensuring both routes benefit from the same high standards of efficiency and comfort.

The contract was signed in Vitznau, Switzerland, reinforcing Stadler’s position as a leading manufacturer in the tailor-made rail sector. The trains will be built at Stadler’s Bussnang headquarters.

Each 34.8-metre, two-car train will provide 150 seats and a total capacity of 253 passengers. Specially designed features include slightly reclined seating to offset the gradient, expansive drop-down and upward-facing windows for panoramic views, and barrier-free access for passengers with reduced mobility, families with pushchairs, and travellers carrying winter sports equipment. Ski and sled racks with water drainage systems make winter journeys easier and more convenient.

The trains are engineered for Mount Rigi’s steep terrain, with four powered cogwheel axles providing strong traction and smooth performance in all weather. Regenerative braking technology allows energy generated on downhill sections to be reused to power uphill travel, improving energy efficiency across the route.

Jörg Lustenberger, COO of Mount Rigi Railways, said:

“The procurement of additional vehicles for the line between Goldau and Rigi Kulm is an important step for us in terms of quality, efficiency and sustainability.”

Christoph Leiterer, Head of Engineering in the Tailor Made division at Stadler, said:

“We are continuing our successful cooperation with Mount Rigi Railways. The new rack-and-pinion trains are designed specifically to meet the requirements of both our customer and the route. We are delighted to supply further vehicles for operation on Rigi and would like to thank Mount Rigi Railways for the trust they have placed in us.”
