Storm Claudia: Network Rail Warns of Major Weather Disruption Ahead of Heavy Rainfall
Rail passengers are being urged to check before travelling on Friday and Saturday as severe weather threatens to bring widespread disruption to services across England.
Network Rail teams are preparing for exceptionally heavy rain, with engineers on standby across the country to respond to flooding and safety concerns. The Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings, including a yellow alert for rain covering much of the North West, Midlands and southern England, as well as an amber warning for parts of the Midlands and a yellow wind warning in the North West.
Forecasters warn that some areas could experience a month’s worth of rain within 24 hours, potentially leading to flooding, debris on the line and speed restrictions across key routes.
In advance of the storm, engineers have been working to reduce the impact by inspecting vulnerable locations, clearing drainage channels and ensuring pumps are ready to keep water levels under control. Despite these preparations, Network Rail says disruption to timetables remains likely in the worst-affected areas.
Phil James, Route Director for Network Rail, said: “Passengers should be aware that tomorrow’s weather is likely to cause disruption on the railways. We are doing everything we can to prepare for the impacts and we continue to work closely with our train operator partners. Please plan ahead before you travel and check in with train operators before starting your journey.”
Passengers are encouraged to monitor live journey updates and check before travelling, as weather conditions are expected to worsen through Friday and into Saturday morning.
