Low-emission hybrid vehicles are now available to hire at Scarborough, Selby and Malton stations, giving TransPennine Express (TPE) customers a convenient and sustainable last-mile travel option. The cars, delivered in partnership with Enterprise Car Club, can be booked from anywhere using the dedicated app, allowing travellers to complete their journeys without needing to bring their own vehicle.

Each of the three North Yorkshire stations features a dedicated parking bay with its own rental car. The scheme enables both business and leisure passengers to pick up a low-cost, pay-as-you-go vehicle directly from the station, helping people leave the car at home and rely on rail for the main part of their trip. Users can sign up for £10 and receive the same amount back in driving credit, while rental costs start at £6 per hour or £25 for a full day.

By joining the scheme, new members not only gain access to the vehicles at TPE stations but can also use any of the more than 1,300 Enterprise Car Club vehicles located across 125 towns, neighbourhoods and transport hubs throughout the UK. The partnership is designed to make onward travel flexible, affordable and more environmentally friendly.

Chris Jeffery, Accessibility Lead at TransPennine Express, said:

“Having access to sustainable transport options is an important step to reduce carbon emissions and our journey towards a net zero transport network, so we’re excited to be working with Enterprise Car Club to provide this new service to our customers. It’s a great option for those who may want the freedom of having a car without the expense of owning a vehicle.”

Dan Gursel, Enterprise Car Club Commercial Director in the UK, added:

“Travelling by train and using a car club vehicle for the last leg of the journey makes so much sense for so many business and leisure trips. It means people only use the car when it makes sense to do so and can help businesses to reduce emissions if their employees take the train for more journeys. It brings more choice and convenience for travellers, especially if they don’t already own a car."

Research from CoMoUK in 2024 highlighted the benefits of car clubs in supporting public transport, with 55% of users taking a train or tram at least once a week, compared with 9% of the wider UK population. The survey also showed that half of car club members would not have been able to reach their destination without having access to a vehicle, while 44% required a car to carry luggage or bulky items.
