Rail services between Lancashire and Greater Manchester are facing disruption today after loose bricks were discovered inside a tunnel near Darwen.

The issue was first reported at around 10:00 on Sunday 8 March and has led to speed restrictions being imposed on trains travelling through the area. The problem is affecting the line between Blackburn and Bolton, with services to and from Manchester Victoria also impacted.

The loose masonry has been found inside Sough Tunnel near Darwen, meaning trains must pass through the section of track at reduced speeds while the situation is monitored.

As a result, passengers are being warned that services may experience significant disruption throughout the day, with delays, cancellations and timetable changes expected.

A National Rail spokesperson said:

"A speed restriction in a tunnel between Bolton and Blackburn means that trains will have to run at reduced speed on all lines. As a result, services between these stations may be delayed up to 40 minutes, cancelled or revised."
