Wabtec Corporation has secured a $386 million follow-on order to supply additional R255 hybrid battery-diesel locomotives to New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The order forms part of the MTA’s ongoing Capital Plan, aimed at modernizing the city’s transit infrastructure and enhancing safety for maintenance crews.

The expanded agreement covers both the locomotives and spare parts. Wabtec will manufacture the R255s at its Erie, Pennsylvania design and development center, with deliveries set to begin in 2027. These hybrid locomotives are designed to replace aging work equipment, offering improved reliability, operational efficiency, and cleaner air across the network.

The R255 locomotives are a key component of the MTA’s modernization program, supporting the authority’s long-term strategy to provide safe and efficient transit services. They are specifically designed to improve conditions for maintenance crews, particularly in subway tunnels. Using battery power, the locomotives can operate emission-free during construction, repairs, and maintenance—even when the third rail is de-energized. Each unit’s approximately 500-kWh battery allows several hours of “battery only” operation in confined work zones.

In addition to their hybrid capabilities, the R255 locomotives are equipped with cameras and video recorders to capture images of tracks, lineside assets, and signaling equipment. Onboard diagnostic systems also support smart maintenance practices, empowering crews to monitor and manage the subway system more effectively.

Alan Hamilton, Vice President of Engineering for Wabtec, said:

“The success of the R255 hybrid locomotive is a tribute to the strong working relationship between Wabtec and the MTA. Our collaboration positioned this locomotive as the ideal solution to maintain the subway system efficiently and reliably.”
