Weardale Railway Cancels 2025 Santa Express Due to Major Locomotive Faults

Weardale Railway has announced the cancellation of its popular Santa Express services for Christmas 2025, citing serious and unforeseen mechanical issues with its two operational locomotives. The festive trains, due to begin running at the end of November, have been called off after the heritage railway was unable to source replacement engines in time, despite contacting more than 30 locomotive owners and organisations across the UK. The decision marks a significant disappointment for the railway and its loyal visitors, many of whom view the Santa Express as a key part of their festive traditions.

Earlier this year, Weardale Railway invested heavily in refurbishing one of its main locomotives, which had been scheduled to return to service in October. However, additional mechanical problems discovered during restoration have delayed its completion. Compounding the challenge, the railway’s second locomotive – used as a backup – has suffered a major generator fault, leaving the line without a serviceable engine to operate the Christmas services.

Claire Gibbons, General Manager at Weardale Railway, said: "On behalf of the entire team, I want to sincerely apologise to all our customers and supporters for this disappointing news. After what has been a hugely successful year for Weardale Railway - with sold-out Gin & Cheese Trains, popular stargazing experiences, and a range of well-attended community events - we are sad and frustrated to have to make this decision.

"The Santa Express is a highlight of our calendar and a cherished tradition for many families across the region. Our priority has always been to deliver high-quality experiences that our visitors can rely on. We have explored every possible option to keep the event running, but the mechanical challenges we’re facing simply cannot be resolved in time.

"We know how much families look forward to these magical experiences, and this decision has not been taken lightly. By communicating early, we hope to give families the opportunity to make alternative festive plans, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for an even bigger and better programme next year."

All customers who have booked tickets for the Santa Express will receive a full refund within ten business days, with the customer service team contacting affected passengers directly. Other upcoming events — including the Autumn Photography Train on 9 November and the Halloween Trains on 29 and 31 October and 1 November — will go ahead as scheduled, using a smaller diesel unit unaffected by the mechanical problems.
