West Runton gains seven-day-a-week hourly service on Bittern Line
Greater Anglia will introduce an hourly Sunday service to and from West Runton on the North Norfolk line this Sunday, 14 December 2025, doubling the current two-hourly frequency. The new service provides additional journey options between Cromer and Sheringham, fulfilling long-standing local aspirations for a more frequent Sunday timetable.
Representatives from Greater Anglia and the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership will be at West Runton from 10.00 ahead of the first new services: the 10.33 to Sheringham and the 10.46 to Norwich.
Local stakeholders and residents have long sought a seven-day-a-week hourly service at the station, which is already in place from Monday to Saturday. Greater Anglia has acted to meet this demand with the December 2025 timetable change.
West Runton, popular with walkers using the Coastal Path, will benefit from the additional stops, offering more options for those travelling by public transport to enjoy the scenic area. While particularly busy in summer, the village is increasingly a year-round destination for short breaks and day trips, supported by Greater Anglia’s high-quality bi-mode trains on the Bittern Line between Norwich and Sheringham.
The line consistently achieves annual punctuality of over 96 percent, and the introduction of longer, more comfortable trains in 2019 has improved the journey experience for passengers. The route, its communities, and local attractions are promoted by the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership, which has supported the line’s development since 1997.
Jonathan Denby, Head of Corporate Affairs for Greater Anglia, said:
“We are pleased to be launching an hourly Sunday service for West Runton this Sunday, giving customers and the community there an hourly service seven days a week. Wherever practical, we try to develop and improve services in line with local needs, so we’re glad that we can provide this enhancement, which follows local feedback about service aspirations. We will keep on working to build the success of the Bittern Line. The progressive improvements we have made over the last 30 years have helped increase passenger numbers on the line from around 200,000 journeys a year in 1994 to over 760,000 now.”
