£50k Accessible Lounge Opens at Derby Station to Improve Passenger Experience
A brand-new Assisted Travel Lounge has opened at Derby Station, offering a dedicated and supportive environment for passengers who need extra help when travelling. The facility has been delivered by Transport UK and East Midlands Railway (EMR) and has been developed in close consultation with local accessibility groups to ensure it meets a wide range of needs.
Situated close to the main concourse, the lounge has been designed to provide comfort, inclusivity, and ease of use. Features include accessible seating areas with integrated charging points, clear circulation space for wheelchair users, and a redesigned desk area with a split-level counter to support those with reduced mobility. Acoustic wall panels have also been installed to create a calmer atmosphere, alongside a new Customer Information Screen offering larger and clearer updates for travellers.
Energy-efficient heating has been integrated subtly into the space, helping maintain comfort while reducing energy usage. A striking wall image of Monsal Head has also been added, celebrating the natural landscape of the region. The facility represents a £50,000 investment and builds on similar accessibility initiatives across the EMR network.
Passengers requiring extra help are encouraged to speak to station staff, who can guide them to the lounge and provide further support for their journey.
Helen Dolphin MBE, Chair of EMR's Access Panel, said:
"I'm really pleased to see the launch of the Assisted Travel Lounge at Derby Station. Accessible spaces like this are vital in helping to remove some of the barriers disabled people face when travelling. Having a welcoming, safe, and supportive environment can make a huge difference, turning what might be a stressful experience into one that feels inclusive and dignified. This is a positive step towards making rail travel more accessible for everyone."
Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said:
"We’re proud to continue improving the experience for our customers with the opening of the new Assisted Travel Lounge at Derby. This space has been carefully developed with feedback from local groups and is designed to offer a safe, calm, and welcoming environment for all. It’s just one part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that every passenger can travel with confidence and comfort."
The new lounge reinforces Transport UK Group’s ongoing commitment to putting passengers and communities first, and marks the latest milestone in ongoing efforts to make the rail network more inclusive and accessible for all.
