Avanti West Coast Launches Photography Contest to Celebrate West Coast Communities
Avanti West Coast has launched a photography competition inviting people across its route to capture the spirit of the communities connected by the West Coast Main Line.
The Together We Roll Photography Competition is open to amateur, emerging and professional photographers, who are encouraged to submit an image that reflects the essence of the towns and cities linked by the operator’s trains. Organisers say they are looking for work that highlights cultural identity, everyday interactions, celebrations, or any moment that captures the railway’s role in bringing people together.
The competition takes place during a milestone year for the UK, as the country marks 200 years since the birth of the modern railway. Avanti West Coast says it wants to acknowledge the part rail travel continues to play in people’s lives, particularly across the regions it serves.
This latest initiative follows the introduction of the operator’s Together We Roll train wrap, designed by digital artist Baraka Carberry. The artwork reflects the diversity of the people and communities across Avanti’s network and supports its wider Equality, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.
The competition will run from 18 November until 14 December 2025, with four categories open for submissions: Emerging artists; Amateur photographers; Professional photographers; and Our People. Winning work will be showcased at a private Avanti West Coast event held at The National Gallery in London, and selected entries will also appear in Modern Railways Magazine and displayed at stations on the West Coast Main Line. Winners will additionally receive a pair of First Class tickets.
A judging panel including Baraka Carberry, experienced photographers and rail industry journalists will select the final collection of images.
Jo MacPhail, People Director at Avanti West Coast, said:
“Our Together We Roll train wrap is all about celebrating the people who live and work on the West Coast Main Line and with 2025 being a special year for the railway we felt it was a great opportunity to capture the spirit of communities across our route. This competition is designed to showcase the vibrant towns, cities, as well as people we serve and celebrate their connection to the railway through the lens of keen photographers. We hope to capture a unique snapshot of the West Coast that can be enjoyed by the millions of people who travel through our stations each year.”
Judge and artist Baraka Carberry added:
“I am so excited to take part in judging for this competition. I cannot wait to see people celebrate culture celebration and joy through art! It feels like everything has come full circle and now the public is part of this “Together we Roll” artistic process! Just remember to stay unique and true to yourself because no one else can but you.”
