Avanti Launches Final Phase of Macclesfield Station Revamp Ahead of 2026 Completion
Avanti West Coast has confirmed that the final phase of a major £2 million redevelopment of Macclesfield station is set to get underway this week, marking a significant step in plans to transform passenger facilities at the Cheshire rail hub.
The upcoming work focuses on the main station building and aims to deliver what the operator describes as a more welcoming gateway for rail travellers. When complete, the project is expected to provide a much-improved environment for customers arriving into or departing from the town by train.
Plans include a redesigned entrance area and substantial upgrades to core passenger facilities. The existing space on platform 1 will be reconfigured to house a revamped ticket office, new waiting room, and toilets, with an accessible toilet also forming part of the improvements. The project will additionally introduce a new on-site retail unit. The redevelopment builds on recent changes at the station, including the installation of newly enhanced bike storage, which entered service last month.
As part of the wider improvements, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology is due to be installed in the station car park. This system is intended to streamline entry and exit and remove the need for travellers to queue at pay machines after their journey. Payment options for parking are set to increase, with card, Google Wallet, Apple Pay and cash expected to be accepted, either before boarding or after returning from travel.
During the construction period, the main station building will be closed and facilities reduced. Temporary toilets will be available on platform 1, and alternative ticket retailing arrangements will be in place. The station will operate on a cashless basis throughout the works, meaning only card payments will be accepted. Passengers are being encouraged to purchase tickets online when possible to avoid disruption.
Dean Duthie, Engineering and Infrastructure Director at Avanti West Coast, said:
“This investment is part of our commitment to offer the best possible experience to our customers. The redevelopment will make the station a more welcoming environment and an improved gateway to Macclesfield – a town we’re proud to serve. We recognise the work taking place will mean reduced facilities for customers using the station and would like to thank them for their patience and understanding. As always, our station team will be on hand to help with any queries.”
The project is currently scheduled for completion in spring 2026.
