Chesterfield station platforms strengthened as multi-million-pound project advances
Significant progress has been made on Network Rail’s multi-million-pound programme to strengthen platforms at Chesterfield station.
Sections of platforms 1 and 2, each measuring 40 metres, have been rebuilt using glass-reinforced plastic panels. These panels are designed to be quicker to install while maintaining the durability of traditional construction methods. The work was carried out over the Christmas period when trains were not running, ensuring passengers were not affected, and the station will remain open throughout the remainder of the project.
The steel framework beneath the Crow Lane platform has also undergone maintenance, including grit-blasting, repairs, and repainting. Alongside this, new fencing and lighting have been installed to enhance safety and security for passengers. The full scheme is scheduled for completion by the end of March 2026.
Jonny Ham, Network Rail lead portfolio manager, said:
“Our teams worked incredibly hard across the Christmas period to deliver this important phase of the Chesterfield platform upgrades. Completing these works now helped us minimise disruption and has kept us on schedule to complete the overall project on time – delivering modern, resilient platform structures that will serve passengers for decades to come.”
