British Transport Police have issued an appeal for information following a racially aggravated incident on board a cross-country train service.

The incident took place on Friday 30 January during the 6.38pm train travelling from Derby to Cardiff Central. A young man and woman were seated at a table on the service when another passenger boarded the train and abruptly placed his bag on the table in front of them.

According to investigators, the situation escalated when the man attempted to sit on top of the young man’s bag. When challenged about his behaviour, the man allegedly became verbally aggressive.

Police say the confrontation continued for around 15 minutes, during which the young man was subjected to racial abuse, including slurs and offensive comments. The suspect eventually left the train when it stopped at Burton-on-Trent.

Officers have now released images of a man they believe could assist with their enquiries and are keen to identify and speak with him as part of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone who recognises the individual or has information that may help is asked to contact British Transport Police by texting 61016 or calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 663 of 30 January.

Information can also be given anonymously through Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
